Well Fed Buff is a sweet little column at WoW Insider that I’ve been contributing to since late last year. At first, the column presented a straightforward profile: write up a simple recipe, adding a bit of WoW flair. I dug through my recipes for favorites from my early days of cooking, sharing favorites such as Night Dragon’s Breath Dip and Maiev’s Grudge.
Then along about Tauren Toenails, Well Fed Buff and I started getting chummy. Readers and I both seemed to get a giggle from recipes in gamespeak:
- Buff other stats by adding various herbs to the dry mix. Go easy. Start with ½ tsp. at a time, until you learn how much you can add without pulling aggro.
- Add +Sta by substituting wheat germ for part of the bread crumbs.
- Try basil and oregano for a traditional +Agi boost.
- Experiment with thyme, marjoram and parsley for your casters.
- Fire Mages, Holy Priests and Warlocks will enjoy a healthy sprinkle of garlic powder and paprika.
Unfortunately, in the world of magazines and online publishing (where I’ve spent the most time writing recently), the world spins anything but predictably. Sometimes you can perceive the loosening grip of gravity just before your feet leave the ground, but other times, you fly right off the Earth. With that kind of speed, sometimes it’s your stomach you leave behind — and sometimes, it’s your heart.
I’m cutting the strings with two long-term projects this week, victims of our shifting economy. The one that makes me the most wistful — a surprise even to me! — is the humble Well Fed Buff. I didn’t see its most recent traffic stats, but they couldn’t have been too impressive next to the huge hits on the rest of the site. Yet readers always seemed to express genuine appreciation for each installment, and the comments more often than not transcended the usual flaming common to gaming sites.
Tonight, my family is headed for a weekly dinner out together. While we usually aim for someplace that offers healthy fare, tonight I think I’ll be having dessert. It’s a good night for some Delicious Chocolate Cake … Wouldn’t you agree?
